Are Health Coaching Programs For Weight Loss Effective?

According to a recent study overseen by the University of Delaware, patients who participate in a health coaching program focused on weight loss are more successful than those who do not receive this support.

The research in this health coaching study was limited to a group of only 44 obese adults and ran for 12 weeks. The group was divided in half, and one half participated in strategic health coaching for weight loss, while the other half (the control group) was allowed to participate in a personal or organized weight loss program, locate and participate in support systems, and receive standard health care but were not allowed to use focused healthcare coaching.

The coaching was done either in person, by phone, or via video conferencing, with the first patient meeting lasting between an hour and 90 minutes, followed by five more sessions occurring every other week until the trial was completed.

After 12 weeks, the group that received health coaching had lost an average of almost 16% of their excess body weight,* but the control group only lost 2.5% of their excess body weight. The patients who received the individualized coaching increased their physical activity by almost one hour per week, while the control group only increased theirs by around 7 minutes each week.

*Excess body weight is the number of pounds you would need to lose to reach a healthy body mass index and weight. For example, if your height and frame indicate that your ideal body weight is 150 pounds but you currently weigh 200 pounds, your excess body weight is 50 pounds.
