Lizzo’s Weight Loss Journey

Almost 74% of American adults are considered overweight or obese according to the standard body mass index (BMI) scale, which means that over 177 million people are facing the common struggle to maintain a healthy weight.

Some struggle in private, while others who are in the public eye are not given the space to navigate what is still a deeply stigmatized condition without the entire world watching and judging. Dealing with weight loss is hard enough, but doing it while under constant public scrutiny adds a whole different level of pressure.

Lizzo can tell you all about how that feels because the subject of her weight and her most recent weight loss journey have been all over the headlines. Today, we are going to answer some of the questions we have been getting about how Lizzo lost weight and if Lizzo is on Ozempic.

A Bit About Lizzo

Lizzo was born Melissa Jefferson in Detroit, Michigan, and moved to Houston when she was 10. Always encouraged by her parents to embrace her creativity, she learned to play the flute and began experimenting with freestyle rap. She formed a rap group at the age of 14, which is when she started using the nickname Lizzo, a blend of a childhood nickname, Lissa, and some influence from a Jay-Z song, “Izzo.”

She studied classical music at the University of Houston but left college early to focus on her developing music career. Her father, who had been a significant source of encouragement to her in her music career, suddenly passed away in 2009, and she began to question her purpose as a musician. She fell into depression and ended up living out of her car. She shared in an interview that she sat in her car on Thanksgiving Day and cried herself to sleep. Ten years later, she had the number one song and the number one album.

Lizzo and Body Positivity

Lizzo has experienced weight fluctuations throughout her career, and the entire world got a bird’s-eye view. What sets her apart from many is that she chose to stop comparing herself to others or to the ideals of others and decided to love herself just as she is. She became a great source of inspiration to many through her public display of body positivity, through her music, in interviews, and on her social media platforms.

Why Did Lizzo Begin Her Weight Loss Journey?

Lizzo shared in an interview with People Magazine that what she calls her “weight release journey,” which began in early 2023, was not intended to make her thin but to improve her mental health. She shared that working out and exercising increased her endorphin levels and has helped her shift her mindset.

She also elaborated on this topic in a TikTok video and shared how she would never want to be thin, but how being deliberate in her holistic health and having realistic expectations about her fluctuating body size has helped her mental state.

When Could The Public Tell That Lizzo Lost Weight?

Lizzo shared that she started seeing real changes by early 2024, and her fans were also noticing the changes in her figure, began discussing it on social media platforms, and speculated about how she was doing it. There were many theories, but the question that stood out the most was, “Is Lizzo on Ozempic?”

How Did Lizzo Lose All That Weight?

Did Lizzo use Ozempic? Yes, she did use it for a short time. In fact, in an interview on the “Just Trish” podcast, she said, “I have tried everything,” and that she had tried Ozempic but decided early on that it was not the best choice for her in the long run. Lizzo said that Ozempic works because it helps you eat less food, but if that is something you can control on your own, using mind over matter, it would do the same thing.

She also chose to change from her vegan diet, where she was eating what she called “fake meat” and consuming a lot of bread, to eating a more balanced diet of whole foods.

How Much Weight Has Lizzo Lost?

In a recent social media post (June 2025), Lizzo shared with her fans that she had reached her “goal weight” and that she had not been this weight since 2014.

She lost 60 pounds, going from 308 pounds to 248 pounds, and has reduced her body fat percentage by 16% and lowered her body mass index (BMI) by 10.5 points.

What Worked The Best To Boost Lizzo’s Weight Loss?

1. She Changed Her Diet

Lizzo revealed that she made a major shift in the kinds of foods she was eating after a trip to Japan. She said that during her time there, she ate sushi, eggs, and animal proteins, and she was surprised at how much better they made her feel, so she decided to make these dietary changes a permanent part of improving her health.

She stopped following a vegan diet full of processed faux meats and carbohydrates and began consuming a diet of whole foods that included beef, chicken, and fish, which left her feeling more satisfied and better able to control her intake of calories.

2. She Watched Her Calories and Her Mindset

Lizzo has shared with her fans that for her, losing weight comes down to consuming fewer calories than she takes in. She must have also realized that the type of calories you eat matters, because she is concentrating on being more discerning about what she is eating.

She also talked about how she is focusing more on her health and overall well-being so she can avoid emotional eating, drinking, and stress from social pressure.

3. Improved Her Fitness Routine

Lizzo has made consistent daily workouts and weight training part of her normal routine. She has credited her more toned figure and the changes she has made in her lifestyle, including consuming a healthy, well-balanced diet, to “working really, really hard.”

4. Working on Health Beyond Weight

Lizzo shared that there are some days that she loves her body, and other days she does not, but it is more important to her that she stay focused on her entire picture of health. Taking care of her body, inside and out, and her emotional health.

Where Can I Find Weight Loss Help?

As you can see from Lizzo’s story, weight loss requires a significant degree of dedication and a mindset that focuses on long-term achievement and not a one-time goal. She has lost a great deal of weight by focusing on eating whole foods, staying active, and being deliberate in creating a calorie deficit through healthy lifestyle habits, and treating her health as a long-term journey that is ongoing.

Lizzo did use Ozempic and would never shame anyone else for using medication, because it can be a useful tool. She just didn’t feel it was right for her. The majority of her progress was achieved by the lifestyle changes she made and continues to follow.
