The Spatz3 intragastric balloon is an FDA-approved adjustable balloon that is placed into the stomach by endoscopy. FDA approval was granted in October 2021. This is a non-surgical procedure. It works similar to other intragastric balloons. The gastric balloon is filled with liquid and expanded to take up space in the stomach. This reduces the amount of available space for food, leading to a feeling of fullness and a reduced appetite which helps patients lose weight.

How Is Spatz3 Different from Other Gastric Balloons?

The Spatz3 balloon is unique in that it is the first adjustable intragastric balloon available in the United States. What this means is that the volume of fluid in the balloon can be adjusted up or down depending on how the patient is doing. If the patient feels their weight loss has plateaued, the volume of the intragastric balloon can be increased with another quick endoscopy procedure. This causes the balloon to take up more space in the stomach and leads to additional weight loss. On the other hand, if the patient is having too many symptoms after initial intragastric balloon placement (ie. nausea and vomiting), the volume of the intragastric balloon can be decreased with a quick endoscopy procedure. This can help decrease symptoms and avoid needing to remove the balloon early.

This balloon remains in place in the stomach for up to 8 months. During these 8 months, patients have close follow up with the specialist and nutrition team to help make changes in their diet and behaviors to help lose weight. After 8 months, the balloon is removed with another endoscopy procedure. Those dietary and behavioral changes will play an important role once the balloon is removed in order to maintain weight loss.

Who is a Good Candidate for Spatz3?

The Spatz3 gastric balloon may be suitable for individuals who meet certain criteria, including:

  • A BMI (body mass index) of 30, but this can vary by patient. BMI is a measure of body fat based on a person’s height and weight, and a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese;
  • Individuals who have not been successful with traditional weight loss methods but understand and are motivated to make the necessary lifestyle changes to support their weight loss goals;
  • Individuals who are not eligible or not interested in undergoing more invasive weight loss surgeries;
  • Individuals should generally be in good overall health and be able to tolerate an endoscopic procedure for the insertion and removal of the gastric balloon. Certain health conditions, such as severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or previous stomach surgeries, may affect the suitability of a gastric balloon;
  • Individuals who are willing to participate in the 12-month program that accompanies a weight loss balloon procedure. This comprehensive weight loss program includes eating a healthy diet, exercising, and making behavioral changes. At Reveal Weight Loss, patients will have a year-long follow-up with our expert physicians and dieticians/nutritionists.

What Weight Loss Results Should I Expect from Spatz3?

The amount of weight that can be lost with a gastric balloon varies depending on various factors, including the individual’s starting weight, lifestyle changes, adherence to dietary and exercise recommendations, etc.

Based on clinical studies, patients who had the Spatz3 intragastric balloon procedure lost an average of 15% of their total body weight. This can be anywhere from 20-50 lbs depending on your current weight. This is about 5x as much as diet and exercise alone. Motivated patients who follow through with the comprehensive weight loss program at Reveal Weight Loss, may lose significantly more weight.

Patients can continue to lose weight after the balloon is removed if they are committed to making lifestyle changes, such as adopting a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, and making long-term behavior modifications that support weight loss.
